This presentation from the Parks+ Collective examines how Parks Canada is shifting its approach to support Indigenous stewardship, cultural continuity, and healing. Parks Canada manages many iconic landscapes, often within Indigenous territories. Many protected areas have disrupted Indigenous connections to the landscapes, but recent efforts focus on respectful, Indigenous-led stewardship. The new Indigenous Stewardship Policy (2024) aligns with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. To successfully support Indigenous stewardship, Parks Canada shifts their organizatonal culture and develop a broader understanding and awareness of the ongoing rights and responsibilities of Indigenous Peoples. This presentation features Nathan Cardinal, Senior Advisor, Indigenous Affairs Branch, Parks Canada.
