
This article reviews species-at-risk laws across Canada, highlighting inconsistencies and gaps in protections. While federal law covers only certain species, most are managed by provinces and territories, with varying success in identifying, protecting, and recovering at-risk species. Based on findings since a 2012 Ecojustice report, the article recommends seven key improvements, including stronger legislation, integration of Indigenous knowledge, and transparency, to help Canada meet its biodiversity goals.
