Arqvillit, also called the Ottawa Islands and meaning “the place where you see Bowhead Whales” is a chain of 24 islands in the northeastern part of Hudson Bay. This press release by Environment and Climate Change Canada announces the support of the Government of Canada towards the creation of the Arqvilliit lndigenous protected and conserved area (IPCA). This announcement is important because the conservation of Arqvilliit will support Nunavik Inuit’s interests, protect culturally and ecologically significant species, including species at risk such as the polar bear, and is an important step towards reconciliation and Inuit self-determination since the project is led by Inuit of the Northern Village of Inukjuak.
