Welcome to the čukʷaa haʔuk series,

One of our highly esteemed

Nuu-chah-nulth Elders here in Tla-o-qui-aht (Nation) is Joe Martin. And when Joe Martin was a little boy, he recalls that there was an Elder in the community named Naa’wa’sum over in the village of Opitsaht on Meares Island. And he would come and knock on Joe Martin’s family house door. He’d go, “čukʷaa haʔuk!”

And this was Naa’wa’sum’s way of inviting Joe and his mother and father to come to NaWos’ house, and where Naa’waa’sum would feed Joe’s family and then would ha’hopa.

So there’s a connection in Nuu-chah-nulth culture, between haʔuk, which is to feast, and ha’hopa, which is to share knowledge. And this is the birth of the story of the čukʷaa haʔuk series, kind of like a Nuu-chah-nulth Lunch and Learn. We talk about everything from the origin story of Canada…

…to the modern-day application of constitutional law in the establishment of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas. Of course, constitutional law in Canada is only one route. The other route of IPCAs, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, is fully grounded in ceremony, in natural law, and Indigenous law.

And so through this series, we talk about how we can bring these different legal traditions together in Ethical Space, along with the best of modern science and technology for sustainable living and create a better future for all of our grandchildren to come.

So I hope you enjoy our episodes. Klecko Klecko. Chuu.
