This report documents the Heiltsuk Nation’s response to the 2016 Nathan E. Stewart oil spill in their territorial waters. The spill led to the formation of the Dáduqvḷá Committee by the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, which applied the Heiltsuk’s traditional legal order, Ǧviḷás, to assess both the environmental and cultural impacts of the incident. The report outlines the Committee’s decision to hold the responsible parties accountable for harm inflicted on the Heiltsuk people. It also describes how Ǧviḷás guided the community in navigating the spill’s aftermath and offers insights into the Heiltsuk Nation’s self-governance, legal traditions, and cultural resilience, providing a perspective on Indigenous law and environmental stewardship.
