This press release is an announcement from the Grande Alliance, a partnership between the Cree Nation Government and the Québec government. Through this partnership, the Québec government will have protected 20% of Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory before the end of 2020 by recently designating 39,000km2 or 23 new territories reserved for the purposes of a protected area (TRPPA) recently. Central to the Grand Alliance’s objectives are biodiversity conservation and the protection of the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory. These new protected areas will contribute to the attainment of the objective of protecting 17% of Québec’s land and freshwater territory.
