Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Manager Terry Dorward and Tla-o-qui-aht Natural Resources Manager Saya Masso provide a brief introduction to the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Program. The Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation started declaring and establishing Tribal Parks in 1984, after the ‘War in the Woods’ protests to protect Meares Island. Tribal Parks guardians monitor activity in their preserved areas, governed by the cultural laws to ensure that their traditional land and waters are protected from extractive industrial practices.
