This toolkit provides summaries and resources to help promote Indigenous data sovereignty in British Columbia, Canada, and internationally. As more non-Indigenous scientists recognize the importance of Indigenous Knowledge, there is a growing effort to work with Indigenous Peoples on joint research projects. It’s also important to support Indigenous communities in collecting their own data for environmental decisions. However, issues around who owns the data, especially Indigenous data sovereignty, have not kept up with efforts to combine Indigenous knowledge and western science. This is especially true in environmental research, like studying the effects on salmon habitats.
