This report highlights the importance of Indigenous-led efforts to protect vital ecosystems. The experiences of the Indigenous Watersheds Initiative (IWI) offer valuable insights that can support wider conversations on decolonizing watershed protection, restoration, and management. It also helps promote the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The IWI is a three-year initiative (2022-2025) delivered by MakeWay and Watersheds B.C., with a $15 million investment from the Province of British Columbia. The initiative is dedicated to supporting Indigenous-led visions for watershed security and stewardship across British Columbia, and is grounded in the expertise of First Nations communities, who are actively fulfilling their responsibilities as caretakers of the land and water.
