This article announces that the Inuit in northern Labrador and the federal government signed a Statement of Intent on marine protection, a key step in the advancement of Imappivut. Imappivut is an initiative aiming for the recognition of Labrador Inuit connection, knowledge and rights to the ocean. Imappivut includes the development and implementation of a Nunatsiavut Marine Plan to manage and protect Labrador Inuit interests within the coastal and marine areas falling under the extent of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement (LILCA). Through community engagement and by gathering Traditional Knowledge to identify the ecological, cultural, economic and social interests of Labrador Inuit, Imappivut will inform the development of the marine plan while working with the Government of Canada towards contributing to achieving Canada’s international marine conservation targets.
