This Marine Protected Area draft management plan was prepared by the Kitasoo Xai’xais Stewardship Authority (KXSA) under the direction of the Kitasoo
Xai’xais Hereditary and Elected Chiefs.
“Kitasu Bay is an area of critical importance to the Kitasoo Xai’xais. We have used and relied on this
Bay for food, cultural, and economic purposes since time immemorial. It remains a unique and special
place for our community. It has a wide variety of foods that we survive on, is close to Klemtu, and is
easily accessible in small boats. It is also home to one of the last abundant herring spawns along the
central coast – where we harvest 95% of our herring eggs.”
