This collection of short videos was produced in 2019 for the 35th anniversary of the Meares Island Tribal Park Declaration in 1984. “Celebration in Victoria, BC” was recorded live at a Tribal Parks commemoration event on April 17 featuring Chief Moses Martin, Miles Richardson, Eli Enns, Joe Martin, David Suzuki, and Art Napoleon. In “Chief Moses Martin Reflects on Tribal Parks,” Chief Moses Martin reflects on the movement to defend Meares Island and the role of Nuu-chah-nulth principles such as iisaak and hishuk ish tsawalk in the Tribal Parks initiatives. “Anniversary of the Peaceful Blockade” takes viewers to the site of the blockade 35 years before, where Eli Enns and Joe Martin describe how the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation and their allies took a stand to protect their ancestral gardens on Wah’na’juss Hilth’hoo’iss (Meares Island).

The Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership, Canadian Parks Collective for Innovation and Leadership, the Assembly of First Nations and Environment and Climate Change Canada discuss initiatives to meet Canada’s international conservation targets and advancing Indigenous leadership in conservation.
