Nuxalk Guardian Watchman Protect Salmon

“A healthy salmon population means a healthy Nuxalk.” Coastal First Nations societies have intimate relationships with the natural world, including salmon. But in 2020, a record low number of Sockeye Salmon returned to the Fraser River system, including in the Nuxalk territory. These fish are an important indicator of a healthy ecosystem — which is why the Nuxalk Guardian Watchmen are so important in protecting them. These Guardians are the eyes and ears for their Nation, helping to ensure and support the sustainability of this precious resource.
